Author's Favorite Excerpts

From time to time I will reprint here some short excerpts from the IBTBAGM book. The idea is to give you a flavor of both its content and its tone.

For the first one, I have chosen an essay near the end of the book -- to simulate where your eye might land if you were thumbing through the book and wanted to check some late-appearing content. This pretty well summarizes the book's overall thesis. --BEB
